The crossbill feeds mostly on seeds of pine, larch and spruce. The red male is just visible in the winter light. He behaves like a parrot, if it finds one foot keeps a journal, with its beak the scales falling apart with the long tongue and gets the seeds out. He is a small bird, just 13-17 inches. The female Grosbeak looks against him from already huge.
